WELCOME TO WOOLLY MATTERS & CRAIKTREE SHETLANDS

Woolly Matters is an educational service to schools run by Angela Kirby.

INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO SHEEP
After completing her honours degree in Education Studies (Early Years) she realised that there was a gap in the knowledge of children with respect to where our food and materials actually come from. With this in mind she came up with the idea of introducing children to the world of wool production from sheep to the final product with the help of Mitzi and her friends.

The objectives of this service are for children to have the opportunity to meet the Shetland Sheep, Mitzi and Friends in school and learn about their care and how we use the wool from the sheep.

SHETLAND SHEEP FACTS

Bred for their small size and the quality of their wool, Shetland sheep are hardy little creatures that thrive in the harsh conditions of the Shetland Isles. They are ideal where grazing is of poor quality and exposed.

Their meat is suitable for people on a low cholesterol diet. The sheep at Craiktree Shetlands, however, have all got pet names and are not bred for meat.

SHEEP THAT CHASE DOGS
Tradtional sheep work with dogs is not an option with these characterful little creatures, as they see a working sheepdog as an opportunity to have a little bit of fun. They refuse to gather together in a flock, and Mitzi has been known to chase dogs out of her field. That said, Mitzi and friends have been reared to see people as friends and the opportunity to scrounge a little treat. They are what is known as, "bucket led", as the love of food always gets the better of them.
